EXPECTATIONS ARE THE WINDOW, YOU'RE THE BIRD: HOW TO STOP OUTSOURCING YOUR HAPPINESS

Ever catch yourself expecting your job, your partner, or even your morning coffee to deliver happiness right onto your lap—while also resolving a couple of past life traumas on the side? If so, you’re in good company. Most of us have a couple of sneaky growth blockers lurking under the surface—subconscious expectations we didn’t even know we’d signed up for.

Here’s the thing: what’s constant isn’t always conscious. These patterns just feel “normal” or like a permanent part of who you are. Spoiler alert—they’re not.

The Hidden Script: Outsourcing Fulfillment

Let’s get real. Maybe you’re waiting for your boss or your partner to hand you fulfillment. Or maybe you keep putting off that creative project because you’re already worried it won’t be Grammy-worthy. (Trust me, my folk singer dreams are still pending.)

And yes, you can actually listen to one of my albums here on Apple Music or Spotify. I don’t make this stuff up. That’s the album I recorded right before heading off to do Into the Badlands; you should check that out too, here.

The Kicker: Who’s Really in Charge?

When these hidden expectations run the show, we end up outsourcing our happiness—putting pressure on everyone and everything around us to deliver. It’s like hoping your yoga pants will do the stretching for you. I always wanted my Jeans to make me Chuck Norris.

Here’s the problem: when you don’t see these patterns, you can end up stuck, overwhelmed, or chasing happiness like it’s a lottery ticket blowing down a busy highway.

How to Spot (and Stop) Sneaky Growth Blockers

Growth starts when you notice these subconscious scripts. Here’s how to break the cycle:

  • Step 1: Get Off Autopilot. Start noticing your daily habits and mental scripts. What “shoulds” and expectations are running in the background?
  • Step 2: Build Structure. Focus on nourishing your roots—physical and mental health—rather than chasing quick results. Showing up for yourself is instant. That's a skill in itself.
  • Step 3: Integrate. Apply new habits to your real life. Small, consistent changes beat big, unsustainable ones every time. Remember, 1 minute can easily grow to 2, then 20, but trying to find 30 minutes of focus often never happens.
