The rule Matt lives by is; “If you don’t show up and practice, it’s all BS.” Don’t believe him? Matt has been a martial artist since he was 5 and became a professional musician at 13. While other people were out drinking or watching TV Matt was touring with his band and spending his nights in parks and college campuses training martial arts. After his nomadic fighting bard period, Matt settled in Oakland, where he opened his dojo The Open Matt. From this base of operations he’s been recruited as a trainer for professional athletes and celebrities. Matt was a lead stunt performer and trainer for the AMC TV Series, Into the Badlands, as well as the Wellness Trainer for The Matrix: Resurrections. He’s also consulted on de-escalation and communication techniques for Defense Contractors and local law enforcement agencies.
Matt has developed a system called YAMA that blends Yoga and Martial Arts into a complete wellness practice. Matt also teaches emotional intelligence, situational mindfulness and decision making under stress. His techniques are used by fighters, celebrities, law enforcement, children, and adults of all levels.
Matt balances the physicality of martial arts and yoga with his love for writing poetry, journaling, songwriting and exploring beautiful landscapes in his Jeep.
